A man in Mint Hill, North Carolina, has been arrested following an incident where his pregnant wife accidentally shot herself, resulting in the death of their 7-month-old unborn baby. The event transpired on Sunday, April 12, when Luis Marcano-Marcano reportedly fired a weapon while under the influence of alcohol and narcotics.
His wife then took possession of the firearm, and during an attempt to place it in her pocket, she accidentally discharged it, sustaining a fatal wound to the stomach. Marcano-Marcano transported his wife to the hospital before disposing of the weapon. The woman later informed the authorities that her husband had fired the gun near her, and she intervened due to his intoxication.
As of Tuesday, April 14, Marcano-Marcano faces charges for discharging a firearm within city limits and is being held on a $1 million bond. A judge deemed him a danger to the public, citing the alleged disposal of the firearm and its role in the unborn child's death. While murder or manslaughter charges are not currently filed, they may be added as the investigation continues, given North Carolina law allows for charges related to fetal death.
