Kratom Arrest Precedes NBA Player's Sudden Demise

NBA player Brandon Clarke, 29, of the Memphis Grizzlies, was arrested in Arkansas six weeks prior to his death on May 11, 2026. During the stop, initiated for him fleeing police at speeds exceeding 100 mph in a new Corvette, officers discovered several large bags labeled '100% Pure Mitragyna Speciosa' (kratom) and a THC vape pen. Clarke, who had been sidelined due to injuries including a torn Achilles tendon and knee procedures, reportedly told officers the substance was 'just kratom.' Kratom, an herbal extract, has potential stimulant and sedative effects and can be highly addictive, with the FDA warning of serious adverse events. The DEA notes potential for dependence and psychotic symptoms, while the FDA has linked it to liver toxicity, seizures, and, rarely, deaths when combined with other drugs. In Arkansas, kratom is illegal and classified as a Schedule I drug; however, it was legal in neighboring Tennessee, where Clarke played. Clarke faced felony charges for trafficking a controlled substance and fleeing, alongside misdemeanor charges. The cause of his death in Los Angeles remains under investigation by the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, with the case status currently 'deferred' pending additional testing.
