An RTI activist, Amit Maurya, 40, sustained a critical gunshot wound near his neck in Navi Mumbai on Monday, April 7, 2026, at approximately 11:45 PM. The attack occurred while Maurya and his friend, businessman Sandeep Gavas, 44, were near their parked vehicle in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Rahivasi chawl area of Sector 1, Airoli. An unidentified biker, wearing a helmet, approached the pair and fired four shots from a pistol.
Two bullets from the initial volley struck the windshield of Gavas's MUV. As Maurya and Gavas attempted to flee, the assailant pursued them, firing two more rounds. One of these bullets grazed Maurya's neck near his left ear, causing critical injury. The other missed Gavas and hit a roadside wall. Gavas escaped unharmed. Maurya was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Fortis Hospital in Mulund due to his severe condition.
Rabale police have registered an FIR for attempt to murder and violations of the Indian Arms Act against the unknown shooter. Investigations are underway, with police reviewing CCTV footage, though the assailant's helmet and obscured motorcycle license plate hindered identification. The MUV bore a Shiv Sena flag, prompting investigators to explore potential links to political or business rivalries, previous enmities, or revenge motives, as Maurya had used RTI to address civic issues and illegal constructions in Navi Mumbai. The exact motive remains unconfirmed pending the assailant's apprehension.
