A former Northern Arizona University fraternity leader has been sentenced to two months in jail for his role in a hazing death. Carter Eslick, 20, pleaded guilty to a felony hazing charge following the Jan. 31 death of pledge Colin Daniel Martinez, 18.
Martinez died from alcohol poisoning, with his blood-alcohol content measured at 0.425%, significantly higher than the state's legal limit for drivers. He had consumed two bottles of vodka with other pledges as part of a ritual.
Witnesses reported efforts to monitor Martinez's condition throughout the night. His parents expressed grief and a desire for accountability within Greek life. Eslick apologized to the family, taking responsibility for his part in the ritual.
Judge Stacy Krueger noted Eslick's awareness of the danger and the lack of intervention. The university suspended the fraternity after the incident, and the national organization later closed the NAU chapter.
