Summary
- Worker charged with recklessly causing the Pickett Fire that burned 6,800 acres.
- Dozens of wineries lost grape crop and face $90 million in damages.
- Only one winery, PlumpJack Group, received a settlement; others are struggling.

Napa Valley prosecutors have filed criminal charges against Juan Luis Gutierrez Marfil in connection with the Pickett Fire, which ignited at Hundred Acre Winery in Calistoga on August 21, 2025. Marfil, reportedly an independent contractor, admitted to disposing of hot ashes into a burn pile, leading to the blaze that consumed 6,800 acres. This development comes as over 30 small winery and vineyard owners are still seeking to recover an estimated $90 million in losses, including destroyed grape crops and damaged vineyards.
To date, only PlumpJack Group, co-founded by Governor Gavin Newsom, has reached a settlement with Hundred Acre. Other wineries suffered extensive smoke damage or lost entire vine crops, with some facing millions in losses. Legal representatives for the affected wineries express concern that Hundred Acre's insurance may not cover the full $90 million, especially as Cal Fire may also pursue reimbursement for suppression costs. A hearing for Marfil is scheduled for September 9. Meanwhile, legal actions against Hundred Acre continue, with some wineries suing directly for damages.
