Forensic experts have confirmed that the death of 19-year-old Nagendra Kumar Bhatia was a suicide by hanging. Bhatia was found deceased in a Jaripatka police station lock-up on the morning of January 23, 2026. His death was attributed to asphyxia, according to the post-mortem report, which also stated no injuries or foul play were detected.
The deceased was a BSc student and a resident of Handiya in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He had been taken into custody on January 18, 2026. The charges against him included kidnapping and violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The extensive post-mortem examination lasted two hours and was conducted by a specialized team at GMCH.
The entire post-mortem examination was meticulously videographed. The findings and report have been officially forwarded to the relevant authorities, including the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), for further review and action.
