Ajay Nivalekar, the deceased's 31-year-old son, filed a complaint with the Bhandup police. He was alerted to the attack by a friend who identified the assailant as Sadashiv Kamble, a local resident from Siddharth Chawl. The police have registered a murder case against Kamble.
