Human Rights Panel Probes Thane Road Blockade
4 Nov
Summary
- MSHRC directs Thane police to report on 'Dial 112' calls.
- Residents allege protest violated rights to sleep and movement.
- Panel seeks probe into protest permission and FIRs.
The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has formally directed Thane police to provide a detailed report on their response to calls made to the 'Dial 112' helpline during a significant protest. This demonstration, which occurred on October 27, saw thousands gather on Thane's Ghodbunder Road, blocking traffic for over six hours. The protest was a response to the perceived inadequate investigation into the September murder of Shiv Sena (UBT) functionary Pradeep Purnekar.
Residents who filed complaints with the MSHRC alleged that the demonstration severely impacted their fundamental rights. These violations included the right to sleep, health, dignity, free movement, access to emergency services, and a peaceful environment. The complainants described unprecedented chaos, particularly in the Louis Wadi area and along Ghodbunder Road, noting the 'illegal political agitation' caused a cascading effect on the entire city.
MSHRC Chairperson Justice A M Badar acknowledged the prima facie case presented by the residents, issuing interim recommendations for immediate relief. The commission highlighted the serious nature of the alleged ongoing violations and the authorities' failure to protect residents' human rights. Police have been instructed to ensure prompt attention to 'Dial 112' calls and written complaints, with written confirmation of action taken. Additionally, traffic police were tasked with developing and implementing a traffic management plan within two days for the affected stretch.
