Platforms like YouTube and Instagram have been granted a strict 48-hour deadline to take down clips circulating as memes, reels, and sensationalized videos.
This action follows a petition highlighting how edited excerpts from open court hearings were selectively circulated, distorting judicial proceedings and eroding institutional dignity. Petitioners argued that such sensationalized content, often featuring judges' remarks and courtroom exchanges, amounts to contempt of court. The court previously requested Meta to identify objectionable content, and acting on that, petitioners submitted a list of 102 URLs.
The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf, stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of judicial processes. The case is scheduled for further hearing on March 24, with discussions expected regarding a potential move to a more secure, Webex-based system for hearings.
