15 Mar
Summary
- Mother drugged daughter for over a year, faking cancer.
- Abuse uncovered when school counselor checked hospital records.
- Daughter has rebuilt her life and has a happy family now.

In Urbana, Ohio, a mother named Teresa Milbrandt subjected her five-year-old daughter, Hannah, to a harrowing year-long ordeal. Milbrandt convinced her community, friends, and family that Hannah had terminal cancer, a claim that was entirely fabricated. Hannah was given sleeping pills and other medications, leading her to believe she was undergoing painful treatments and wore bandages, all while feeling largely healthy.
The deception unraveled in 2002 when a school counselor attempted to work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation for Hannah. Discovering a lack of hospital records, the counselor's inquiry led to an investigation. Milbrandt was arrested in December 2002 and subsequently found guilty in August 2003 of theft and child endangerment. She claimed insanity and Munchausen syndrome by proxy, but her plea was rejected, and she received a prison sentence.
Hannah, now 30, has spoken about the lasting impact of her mother's abuse, including struggles with mental health and therapy. She has severed ties with her mother but maintains a close relationship with her father, who also served a prison sentence for child endangerment. Despite her traumatic childhood, Hannah has found happiness, married, and has children, expressing gratitude for her current fulfilling life.
