Berkeley police arrested a mother and son on Wednesday in connection with a violent shooting that occurred last month. The incident, which took place on June 14, involved Darius Tate, 19, allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend inside a home on Adeline Street. Authorities report that Tate shot the woman in the face as she attempted to leave in her car.
Tate is also accused of stealing cash from the victim's vehicle before fleeing the scene. The 19-year-old woman sustained severe facial injuries and was hospitalized, with her condition described as continuing to improve as of Thursday. Detectives located and arrested Tate and his mother, Ann Fernandez, 53, in San Leandro.
Fernandez is suspected of picking up her son after the shooting and providing him with a change of clothes to aid his escape. Investigators recovered two handguns and evidence linking the pair to the crime during a search of an apartment. Tate faces charges including murder, robbery, and firearm offenses, while Fernandez is charged as an accessory.
