In Kansas City, Missouri, a mother has entered a guilty plea to first-degree involuntary manslaughter following the death of her five-year-old son, Grayson. The child died after falling from their 17th-story apartment window in November 2023. Authorities were alerted by a passerby, as the mother, Corinne O'Connor, did not contact emergency services.
O'Connor's apartment was noted by police to be in an unsanitary and unsafe condition, with feces on the floor and no bed in the bedroom. Court documents revealed that a landlord alleged O'Connor had removed a safety device that prevented the window from opening fully. Prosecutors stated she "knowingly acted in a manner that created a substantial risk to the life, body and health" of her son by failing to supervise him near the open window.
She has been sentenced to serve the maximum of 10 years with no parole for this Class C felony. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office acknowledged the plea as a balance between accountability and the mother's grief, expressing hope she receives support during her incarceration.
