Mom Jailed for Life After Hiding Children's Bodies

Hakyung Lee, 43, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in New Zealand for the murders of her eight-year-old daughter, Yuna Jo, and six-year-old son, Minu Jo, in 2018. She administered a fatal overdose of prescription medicine to the children before concealing their bodies in suitcases. These suitcases were then left at an Auckland storage facility and remained undiscovered for four years until August 2022.

Following the murders, Lee, a New Zealand citizen, changed her name and fled to South Korea. Her deliberate actions, including changing her name and moving belongings, were cited by the court as evidence of calculated planning. The bodies were only found after Lee defaulted on storage unit payments, leading to an auction where the buyers discovered the horrific contents.

During sentencing, Justice Geoffrey Venning acknowledged Lee's severe depression but emphasized the calculated nature of the murders, rejecting claims of impulsivity. Lee must serve a minimum of 17 years before she can be considered for parole. Victim impact statements from her mother and brother-in-law highlighted the profound devastation and grief experienced by the family.
