Summary
- Mother found guilty of two first-degree murder counts and arson.
- One child stabbed to death, another died of smoke inhalation.
- Mother fled with third child, was later apprehended.

Jennifer Marie Stately, 37, was convicted on Thursday of two counts of first-degree murder and arson. The crimes occurred on March 15, 2024, at her home in Red Lake Nation, Minnesota. Stately fatally stabbed her six-year-old son, Remi, before setting her house on fire. Her five-year-old son, Tristan, died of carbon monoxide poisoning, trapped inside the burning home. Stately fled with her three-year-old son, who has not been named, and was later found approximately 150 miles south of Red Lake Nation.
The jury rejected Stately's insanity defense after a two-and-a-half-week trial. Prosecutors had dismissed state charges to pursue a federal trial. Stately's youngest child was found to be suffering from severe abuse and neglect, exhibiting signs of untreated sores and dental issues. She now faces capital punishment or life in prison without parole. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
