In Westmoreland County, Lauren Maloberti, 36, was convicted of third-degree murder on Thursday for her role in the 2023 death of her 5-year-old adoptive son, Landon. The jury's verdict also included charges of aggravated assault, child endangerment, and conspiracy.
Prosecutors presented extensive evidence over nine days, including testimony from pediatric child abuse experts and forensic pathologists. These experts reported that Landon Maloberti had sustained more than 100 injuries in various stages of healing at the time of his death. A child abuse expert characterized these injuries as torture and medical neglect.
The investigation began when Landon was found unresponsive at a hospital and passed away a week later from a severe brain injury and other trauma. Prosecutors contended that Lauren Maloberti inflicted the fatal injuries and deliberately delayed seeking necessary medical attention for her son.
Landon's father, Jacob Maloberti, also faces charges of homicide and is awaiting legal proceedings. The District Attorney's office praised the investigative team for their diligent work on this sensitive and complex case.
