E-Bikes Seized Tripling Speed Limit
15 Apr
Summary
- Modified e-bikes capable of triple the legal speed were seized.
- Riders were observed traveling at substantial speeds.
- Police emphasize action against dangerous modifications and careless use.

Authorities have seized two e-bikes found to be significantly modified, allowing them to exceed legal speed limits by more than three times. The incident occurred on April 5th in Portreath, Cornwall, when officers noticed the bikes traveling at high speeds. A subsequent chase led to the seizure of the devices.
E-bikes are legally restricted to 15.5mph (25km/h) with powered assistance. However, the seized bikes were reportedly capable of much higher speeds, solely powered by a throttle, which poses a significant danger, particularly on cycle paths.
Police stated that while the majority of e-bike users are responsible, enforcement action is necessary against those who make illegal modifications or ride recklessly. The force emphasized its commitment to public safety, including that of e-bike riders, pedestrians, and other road users. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
