13 Oct
Summary
- MNS worker Ganesh Chukkal was released due to illegal detention.
- Court found the Crime Branch failed to produce him within 24 hours.
- The case involved a flat linked to Akshay Kumar's sister.

A Mumbai court has ordered the release of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) worker Ganesh Chukkal, who was arrested in connection with a cheating and forgery case. The Esplanade 37th Magistrate Court ruled that Chukkal's detention by the Crime Branch was illegal as he was not produced before the competent court within 24 hours of his arrest.
Chukkal, arrested on October 2, was associated with a flat linked to Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar's sister, Alka Bhatia. His custody was extended by police until October 9. However, the Crime Branch took custody on October 6 but failed to present Chukkal in court for three subsequent days.
Chukkal's legal team argued for his release based on illegal detention and procedural non-compliance. The court found the Crime Branch's justifications insufficient and mandated his production within the stipulated 24-hour period after the agency assumed custody. He was subsequently released on a Rs 1 lakh personal recognisance bond.
