James F. Lawson, 39, of Kansas City, has been charged with second-degree murder following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Jessica Cyrus, 41. The incident allegedly took place in Lawson's hospital room at Centerpoint Medical Center on October 22, 2026. Police were called to the scene and found Cyrus deceased from a gunshot wound.
Lawson was observed leaving the hospital in his wheelchair shortly after the shooting and was later found at a nearby strip mall. He informed detectives that he could not recall the events, attributing his memory loss to a severe urinary tract infection and IV medication.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows Lawson, while in his wheelchair, facing Cyrus and appearing to be "frantically messing with the right side of his pants and hip area" moments before she showed signs of distress. A nurse in a nearby room reported hearing a loud noise.
Lawson is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms. Investigators found a box of ammunition and a holster in his wheelchair. He is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
