Michele Hundley Smith, 62, has been reunited with her daughter, Amanda, after an absence of 24 years. The emotional meeting occurred on Thursday, March 26, 2026, outside the Rockingham County Courthouse.
Smith's disappearance dates back to December 2001. She informed her family she was going Christmas shopping and never returned. At the time, she had an active warrant for a drunk driving charge after failing to appear in court in November 2001.
Authorities confirmed Smith's whereabouts on February 20, 2026, shortly after receiving a tip. She was taken into custody on February 23, 2026, and later posted a $2,000 bond. She was scheduled to appear in court on March 26, 2026.
It is believed Smith spent the past two decades residing in a trailer park in a financially distressed part of North Carolina, about two hours away from her original home. Her daughter, Amanda, never stopped searching and had previously spoken about her mother's struggles with alcohol.
