In Saginaw, Michigan, a woman identified as Tasha Beamon is facing felony charges including vulnerable adult abuse and unlawful imprisonment. She is accused of keeping her disabled sister-in-law locked in a basement for approximately two years.
The victim managed to escape her captivity on March 15 by breaking a neighbor's window. She reported being held on an old mattress with a radio constantly playing, and stated she was rarely fed and had no access to water. Police found a lock on the basement door, a mattress, and a bucket of urine.
Upon her escape, the victim was hospitalized in critical condition due to severe malnourishment. Investigators suspect Beamon may have been holding her captive to obtain the victim's disability payments. Beamon was arrested on April 2 and is being held on a $100,000 bond, with a preliminary examination scheduled for April 20.
