In Flint, Michigan, a tragic case has led to murder charges against parents Damien and Jessica O'Brien. Their seven-year-old son, Casper O'Brien, died on November 4, 2025, weighing an alarming 255lbs (115kg).
Authorities allege the O'Briens caused serious physical harm and failed to provide their son with adequate medical care or a safe living environment. Casper, who was reportedly immobile, had texture issues with food and had not seen a pediatrician since February 2024. His parents also failed to take him to a scheduled appointment with a pediatric endocrinologist.
During the investigation, police discovered Casper in a makeshift bed shared with four family members. The couple faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree child abuse. The abuse charge involves their five-year-old daughter, who was also found to be medically morbidly obese and was discovered outside the home in a neglected state.
Prosecutors stated the family had resources, including stable employment and health insurance, indicating that lack of means was not a factor in the neglect. If convicted, the O'Briens could face life in prison.
