Mayor Slain: Cartel Revenge or Extortion?

A suspect identified as Jorge Amando, also known as "The Graduate," has been apprehended in connection with the murder of Mayor Carlos Manzo. Security Minister Omar García Harfuch stated that Amando has ties to the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and was responsible for ordering the deadly attack. The minister emphasized this arrest as a significant step in dismantling the criminal network behind the assassination.

Mayor Manzo, aged 40, was tragically shot seven times while participating in a Day of the Dead observance with his family. This event occurred shortly after he had publicly condemned the extortion faced by local avocado growers and urged the federal government to intensify efforts against powerful cartels operating in the region. The CJNG is known for its involvement in drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion, often targeting officials who resist their demands.

The assassination has ignited public outrage, leading to large-scale protests across Mexico. Demonstrators have expressed solidarity with the late mayor, carrying his image and banners that declare "we are all Carlos Manzo." Some protests have seen clashes with authorities, highlighting the deep public discontent with the ongoing cartel violence and the perceived lack of security.
