Early on June 9, police responded to a motel near Country Club Drive and Hampton Avenue in Mesa following reports of a woman, identified as Aubrey Gabriel, 53, threatening guests with a knife. One guest reported fearing for his life after Gabriel asked if he wanted to be stabbed and advanced on him with the weapon. The manager's intervention allowed the guest to escape.
Officers initially attempted to speak with Gabriel, who refused to leave her room. A second report later that morning indicated Gabriel had again threatened another guest. This led to a significant police response, with over 35 officers, including SWAT and crisis negotiators, being deployed. Non-lethal methods such as flash bangs and pepper balls were used before Gabriel exited her room and was taken into custody.
During her medical evaluation, Gabriel assaulted a firefighter. She was subsequently booked on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault on a first responder. No guests or first responders sustained serious injuries. Police noted Gabriel is unhoused and has a history of aggravated assault linked to mental health issues.
