Two pedestrians, an 18-year-old girl and a 63-year-old man, were seriously injured on Thursday night when they were hit by an alleged drink driver in Windsor, an inner suburb of Melbourne. The incident occurred around 10 pm on Chapel Street, a busy road where police reported the Audi SUV was travelling at speed.
The out-of-control vehicle ultimately collided with a brick wall near a tram stop and pedestrian crossing, approximately 50 meters from where the pedestrians were struck. The driver, a 33-year-old man, reportedly attempted to flee the scene on foot but was detained by witnesses.
Following the incident, the driver returned a positive preliminary breath test for alcohol. He was transported to the hospital for precautionary assessment before being arrested and interviewed by police. He is expected to be charged on summons for offences including dangerous driving and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.
