Summary
- Mayfair's Berkeley Square faces a 30-fold increase in robberies compared to London average.
- Wealthy visitors flaunting expensive items attract thieves targeting luxury watches.
- Businesses like Phillips auction house have suffered ram-raid burglaries.

Once a symbol of old money elegance, Berkeley Square in Mayfair has transformed into an area with Europe's highest rates of street crime. Official figures reveal a shocking 30-fold increase in robberies compared to the rest of London, with approximately 115 incidents per 1,000 residents. This surge is attributed to wealthy visitors, many from overseas, who display status symbols like high-end watches and luxury cars, inadvertently attracting thieves.
Recent incidents highlight the severity of the problem. A Hollywood fashion designer was robbed of a rare £2 million Richard Mille watch just last week. In another case, two Algerian thieves were jailed for targeting undercover police officers posing as a wealthy couple. Businesses have also been targeted; Phillips auction house suffered a ram-raid burglary in May. These events have prompted nearby jewellers to remove valuable stock from display windows at night.
