A district court in Mathura has sentenced Pawan Kuntal, 35, to life imprisonment for the murder of Bhim Singh, 39, and his wife, Bharti Devi, 35. The couple was found strangled and their bodies burned in a rented apartment in March 2022. The court also imposed a fine of ₹2.5 lakh on Kuntal.
The motive behind the gruesome act was a dispute over ₹50 lakh. Kuntal had defrauded the couple by promising lucrative employment for local youths, collecting the money from them. When the jobs failed to materialize, the couple aggressively demanded their money back.
Kuntal lured the couple to his rented apartment on March 22, 2022, under the guise of resolving the dispute. He incapacitated them by spiking their drinks before strangling them. He then attempted to destroy evidence by burning their bodies.
Investigators identified the victims after Bhim's brother visited the mortuary. Kuntal, who had been arrested shortly after the crime, was convicted based on compelling forensic, scientific, and documentary evidence presented by the prosecution.
