Massive Drug Bust Exposes Police Negligence in Vasai-Virar Region

On October 26, 2025, the Mumbai police conducted a raid and seized mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 14 crore from a chemical factory in Nalasopara, Vasai-Virar region. The factory, which was disguised as a legitimate operation, had been running for the past 6 months, just 600 meters away from the Pelhar police station.

The discovery of the large-scale drug manufacturing unit so close to a police station has raised serious concerns about the negligence of the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police force. MBVV police chief Niket Kaushik has ordered a probe to ascertain if any of his personnel were involved in the criminal activity.

Activist Dharmendra Nigam expressed surprise that major drug busts in the region have been carried out by the Mumbai police, rather than the local MBVV force. In April 2025, the Sakinaka police seized MD worth Rs 8 crore in Vasai, and in August 2025, the Mumbai anti-narcotics cell seized Rs 1,400-crore worth of MD in Nalasopara West.

The Vasai-Virar civic commissioner has stated that the shed housing the drug factory, located near the NH-48 highway, will be demolished. Another activist alleged that there are many other illegal industrial units operating in the locality, and authorities should take action against them as well.
