On March 30, Palm Springs International Airport experienced a security incident when Transportation Security Administration officers discovered a live 25mm explosive round within a U.S. Marine's checked bag. The individual, identified as 30-year-old Texas resident Ryan Weaver, was detained at the scene. Weaver reportedly told authorities he found the explosive approximately one year earlier and believed it was not live. Due to significant rust, determining if the munition was live or inert was initially challenging. An X-ray confirmed the round was live, prompting a response from the Palm Springs Police Department and the Riverside County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team. The device was safely transported to a desert area near Gene Autry Trail and destroyed through a controlled detonation, footage of which was later shared by police. The case is being submitted to the Riverside County District Attorney's Office for review regarding potential violations of California Penal Code section 18710. The TSA may also impose civil penalties on Weaver, and he could face repercussions from the U.S. Marine Corps.
