Violent unrest involving hundreds of people has shaken the remote Indigenous community of Maningrida in the Northern Territory between January 1 and January 4, 2026. NT Police responded to multiple large disturbances, some with over 200 participants, amid allegations that individuals were armed. One police officer was assaulted and sustained minor injuries.
During the disturbances, shocking footage emerged showing brutal assaults, with young children and women caught in the middle of the chaos. Local services, including the council office and post office, were forced to close. Senior Sergeant Glenn Leafe stated that social media posts and retributions are fueling the fighting, negatively impacting essential services.
Investigations into several offences are ongoing, with police deploying additional resources from Darwin. Police are working with Traditional Owners and stakeholders to de-escalate tensions. This follows similar incidents in nearby Ramingining just before Christmas, highlighting ongoing community safety concerns.
