Hotel Denies Rooms to Homeless in Freezing Cold
8 Jan
Summary
- Two homeless men were denied accommodation despite paid-for bookings.
- Hotel staff cited 'company policy' for refusing service to rough sleepers.
- Temperatures dropped to -6C during the incident, with a cold weather alert active.

In freezing conditions, two homeless men were denied accommodation at a Manchester Holiday Inn, despite their rooms being prepaid. Charity worker Amanda Thompson stated the hotel staff refused them entry, citing company policy against accommodating rough sleepers based on their appearance. This occurred when temperatures plummeted to -6C, under an amber cold weather health alert.
Thompson described the incident as "complete discrimination on appearance" and "disgusting," emphasizing that the men had valid, paid-for bookings. She contrasted this with a nearby Travelodge, which reportedly offered help to several homeless individuals that night. The Holiday Inn's owner, InterContinental Hotels Group, states online that it aims for equal access to its facilities for all guests.
A video captured a hotel staff member explicitly stating, "I know that you're from the street and the hotel doesn't allow it," attributing the refusal to company policy rather than personal discretion. This event highlights a critical issue of support for vulnerable populations during extreme weather events.
