In Apopka, Florida, a 56-year-old man named Daryl Hill was fatally shot on Tuesday morning. Hill, a father of three, had just dropped his youngest daughter at elementary school when he intervened in a dispute. Witnesses reported seeing a man and woman fighting inside a vehicle that subsequently crashed. The fight continued on the sidewalk. Hill attempted to break up the altercation and was shot by Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26. Vazquez was reportedly out on bond for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at the time of the shooting.
The incident unfolded near Plymouth Sorrento and West Ponkan roads, close to Wolf Lake Elementary School. According to an arrest affidavit, Vazquez and a woman, Kaidy Honaker, were seen arguing intensely before their truck collided with another vehicle. After the pair continued their fight on the pavement, Hill, who was bicycling nearby, got involved. A struggle ensued, and as Hill tried to retreat, Vazquez allegedly retrieved a shotgun from his truck and fired a single shot, striking Hill.
Vazquez has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. A judge has revoked Vazquez's bond in his previous aggravated assault case and ordered him held without bail. Daryl Hill is remembered by his family as a compassionate individual with a big heart, always willing to help others, a trait his wife believes ultimately cost him his life.
