4 Aug
Summary
- Man seeks $176 million after being shot by deputies.
- He warned 911 about a swatting threat beforehand.
- Deputies allegedly fired after a swatting call response.

Axeel Melendez, 24, is seeking $176 million from the Pima County Sheriff's Department following a swatting incident that resulted in him being partially paralyzed. Melendez and his mother have filed a notice of their intent to sue the department and Sheriff Chris Nanos.
His attorney stated that the incident began when someone impersonating Melendez called 311 with a false report about violence at Melendez's home. This call, originating from out of state, allegedly had several indicators of being a hoax.
Melendez had previously received a threatening message related to an online video game. After this threat, he contacted 911 to express concerns about a potential swatting, but was allegedly told not to worry. His attorney claims the 911 operator ignored warnings that the address might be a swatting target.
During the law enforcement response, deputies reportedly smashed through a window. Believing an intruder was present, Melendez grabbed a handgun and took cover. Deputies then allegedly opened fire, striking Melendez in the thigh and shoulder, causing spinal cord injury, broken ribs, and a broken leg.
