On August 16, 2025, James Hatcher was the victim of a random, violent attack in South Croydon, London. While walking down Brighton Road, he was kicked into the path of an oncoming van, sustaining severe, life-threatening injuries. These included a bleed on the brain, broken legs, ribs, jaw, and pelvis, necessitating his placement in an induced coma and multiple surgeries.
The perpetrator, Salman Kamraman Karim, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent at Croydon Crown Court on June 4, 2026, and received an 11-year prison sentence. However, Hatcher recently received a letter from the Ministry of Justice on July 20, 2026, informing him that Karim is eligible for early release after serving only a fraction of his sentence.
Hatcher, a tower crane operator, is still undergoing physiotherapy and struggles with mobility more than a year after the incident. He remains unable to work due to his injuries and expressed devastation and anger at the news of his attacker's potential early freedom, highlighting the ongoing impact of the crime.
Paramedics attended the scene, and despite a significant wait for an ambulance, the London Air Ambulance arrived promptly to provide initial treatment. Hatcher was then transported to St George's Hospital, where he remained for six weeks. He has since been focused on recovery, learning to walk again, but the physical and emotional toll of the attack continues.
