A man accused of defrauding pet owners while promising to care for their dogs has admitted to horrific animal cruelty. Oaveed Rahman, 26, pleaded guilty at Basildon Crown Court to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. The charges stem from an investigation initiated last May. Officers, alongside the RSPCA and Basildon Council, discovered 37 deceased dogs and a cat at a property in Crays Hill, Billericay.
Rahman, who was reportedly advertising the home as a rescue centre, also admitted to 11 counts of fraud by false representation. Inspector Steve Parry of the Basildon Neighbourhood Policing Team acknowledged the significant concern within the local community, stating that Rahman's treatment of the animals was abhorrent and that he defrauded members of his own community.
Rahman has been in remand since his arrest and is now facing a prison sentence. He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 20. Inspector Parry expressed gratitude to those who shared vital information, which proved invaluable in building the case and securing the conviction.
