Man Jailed for 'Frenzied' Taxi Attack

Simon McHugh, 46, has been sentenced to 16 years imprisonment for a violent attempted murder in Nottingham. He repeatedly stabbed his taxi driver friend, who was in his 30s, during a car journey on May 6, 2025. The victim's car eventually crashed into a wall. McHugh then inflicted over 30 further stab wounds to the victim as he lay on the ground.

McHugh's accomplice, Paige Tomlinson, 34, received an 18-month sentence for her involvement in planning the attack and assisting McHugh in evading justice. The court heard McHugh had previously exhibited erratic and threatening behavior, including self-harm and hostage-taking of his then-fiancée and children days before the taxi incident.

The victim survived the ordeal after spending nine days in an induced coma. He reported ongoing discomfort and profound psychological impact. McHugh fled the scene, stole another vehicle, and was later apprehended at his home after Tomlinson contacted the police. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder, false imprisonment, and burglary, while Tomlinson admitted to assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice.
