19 Feb
Summary
- Man jailed for nine years for forcing partner to take abortion pills.
- He threatened to harm the unborn child if she refused.
- The victim's statement spoke of profound loss and forgiveness.

Adeleke Adelani received a nine-year jail sentence in the Republic of Ireland for unlawfully causing the termination of a pregnancy. The court heard that on Valentine's Day 2020, Adelani invited the woman to his home in Letterkenny, County Donegal, under false pretenses. He then forced her to take abortion pills, threatening violence against the nine-week-old foetus if she refused.
Following the forced abortion, Adelani locked the woman in a room. She became unwell and subsequently contacted the gardaí. Adelani, who had researched the procedure online, admitted to the offense before his trial was due to commence in November 2025. Judge John Alymer described the act as extreme physical and emotional violence, also sentencing Adelani concurrently for assault causing harm.
The victim shared a powerful statement, stating her forgiveness of Adelani but emphasizing that it did not condone his actions. She recounted the profound sense of loss, including her child, her safety, and her future plans. Adelani, who is already serving a separate sentence, expressed remorse in a letter to his victim.
