Liam O'Rourke, 50, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for a brutal assault on his former partner. He was convicted of two counts of non-fatal strangulation and actual bodily harm following a trial.
The attacks, which included repeated strangulation and headbutting, took place on the night of July 28 into July 29, 2025. The victim was in a vulnerable state, having been discharged from hospital just two weeks prior following treatment for stage three cancer.
Judge Catarina Sjolin-Knight highlighted the ample evidence of O'Rourke's danger to women, mandating an additional 12 months on extended licence upon his release. A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting any future contact with the victim.
The victim described the profound trauma of the court process and the lasting impact on her life, stating she felt forced to relocate from Louth. O'Rourke has a significant history of offences, with 50 previous convictions for 90 crimes.
