In Ghaziabad, a sessions court has sentenced Anand Kumar to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife, Geeta Devi, in 2021. The attack, which saw Kumar stab his wife in the mouth, rip her tongue, and then fatally stab her with a knife, was witnessed by their two sons.
The court convicted Kumar of murder and illegal possession of a weapon, also imposing a fine of Rs 15,000. Additional district and sessions judge Lokesh Varun stated that while the crime was heinous, it did not qualify as 'rarest of rare' for the death penalty. Life imprisonment was deemed appropriate.
The incident occurred on May 1, 2021, following a domestic dispute. According to their elder son Harsh Kumar, his father attacked their mother with a knife. Neighbors and the sons helped rush the injured couple to the hospital, where Geeta Devi succumbed to her injuries.
Anand Kumar was arrested in May 2021, and the murder weapon was recovered. The defense's claim of an 'unidentified thief' was rejected by the court, which cited the recovery of the weapon as evidence against this narrative. The conviction was under IPC Section 302 and Arms Act Section 25/4.
