Summary
- Man died by suicide hours after drink-driving conviction.
- Inquest found insufficient information sharing between agencies.
- Family believes more support could have saved their son's life.

A 25-year-old welder tragically took his own life in a car park on November 22, 2023, mere hours after his conviction for drink driving at Ipswich Magistrates' Court. Following his release from custody after receiving a fine and a driving ban, Noel Porter died by suicide.
An inquest at Suffolk Coroner's Court heard that Noel had a history of mental health issues and previous suicide attempts. Despite expressing suicidal feelings to police upon his arrest on November 19, and concerns for his safety leading to him being kept in custody, his family feels more support should have been provided.
The jury's conclusion highlighted insufficient sharing of Noel's mental health risks between Suffolk Police, Liaison and Diversion, Serco, and Turning Point. While acknowledging this did not contribute to his death, they suggested better communication could have offered a crucial opportunity to help him.
Noel's parents stated their hope that the inquest's findings will lead to improvements, preventing similar tragedies. They described their son as a hard-working and talented individual, deeply missed by his family. The assistant coroner commended the family for their dignity during the proceedings.
