A 59-year-old man passed away on Monday, January 5, after he was detained by officers from Merseyside Police. The incident occurred on Southport Road in Bootle. During the interaction, the man collapsed and became unconscious. Police officers immediately provided CPR and summoned an ambulance. He was transported to a local hospital but was sadly pronounced dead approximately one hour later.
The Merseyside Police force has confirmed that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been informed and will be leading an investigation into the events. The man's next of kin have been notified, and the police force has extended its condolences to his family. Emergency services, including paramedics, responded to the scene.
As a result of the incident, a section of Southport Road was cordoned off to traffic for investigation purposes, and a police cordon was also established outside a nearby house. Detectives and forensic officers were observed at the scene, and neighbours reported seeing CPR being administered before the man was taken away by ambulance.
