A critical incident was declared by New South Wales police after a 25-year-old man died following a police pursuit early Sunday morning. The pursuit originated from a report of an armed man on the Gold Coast late Saturday. Queensland police located the suspect's vehicle and attempted to detain the driver, but he evaded officers and headed towards the NSW border.
Queensland police alerted their NSW counterparts, who located the vehicle near Banora Point. Despite police directing the man to stop and later deploying road spikes, the pursuit continued. The vehicle eventually drove down an embankment south of Murwillumbah, where officers found the driver unconscious.
Police attempted CPR at the scene, but the man was pronounced deceased. A firearm was recovered from the vehicle. The critical incident declaration means the event will be subject to a review.
