A 35-year-old man, identified as Navas of Vembayam, has died from severe burns he sustained after a fellow drinker allegedly set a group on fire inside a bar. The incident occurred Sunday night, and Navas succumbed to his injuries on Monday, prompting police to reclassify the case as murder.
The accused, Aneesh (32), also suffered over 80% burns and is on ventilator support. Police report that petrol spilled onto Aneesh before the flames spread. The altercation reportedly began when Navas slapped Aneesh after an argument, leading Aneesh to leave and return with petrol.
Besides the deceased and the accused, three other men—Noufal, Arun, and Shyam—sustained burn injuries. Noufal, with over 50% burns, attempted to extinguish the flames by riding his motorcycle and jumping into a pond. He remains in intensive care, while Arun and Shyam are receiving treatment at a private hospital.
