Safford James Wolfson, 36, is in custody following the discovery of his mother, Angela Caprioli, 61, dead in his Laguna Beach residence on July 20. The Orange County District Attorney's Office reported that officers were called to the home after Wolfson's grandmother found the scene horrific, with furniture disturbed and blood present. Caprioli, who had been visiting from Maine, was found in the bedroom exhibiting signs of severe blunt force trauma to her head and face.
Wolfson was located on the floor, covered in blood, and sustained self-inflicted injuries to his neck. Neighbors described him as "mysterious" and noted he had been living in the home for approximately six months. He has been charged with one count of murder, with the use of a hammer as a deadly weapon enhancement. Wolfson appeared in court remotely from the ICU on July 27, represented by his attorney, and has yet to enter a plea. His next court date is scheduled for October.
