In a significant crackdown on illegal trade, Madurai district police seized a substantial quantity of banned tobacco product, gutka, amounting to 521kg. The seizure occurred near Kottampatti in the early hours of Thursday, following a tip-off.
Authorities intercepted an Innova car reportedly carrying the contraband. The two individuals arrested were identified as Vikram Kumar (28) and Kisan (25), both hailing from Jalore district in Rajasthan. Their vehicle was found to have a Rajasthan registration number, though its original registration was from Tamil Nadu.
Further investigation revealed that the gutka was allegedly being transported from Bengaluru, Karnataka, into Tamil Nadu. Along with the contraband, police confiscated the vehicle used for transportation and three mobile phones. A case has been registered at the Kottampatti police station, and the investigation is ongoing, with Madurai superintendent of police B K Arvind vowing strict action against smugglers.
