6 Jul
Summary
- Two suspected burglars involved in a fatal accident near Melur.
- Deceased man's family alleges police torture led to his death.
- Police claim the incident was a road accident following thefts.

A tragic incident unfolded in Madurai district early on Monday when a 20-year-old man, identified as Seemaraja, died and his accomplice Surya, 21, was injured. The pair were allegedly fleeing after committing burglaries in Thiruppuvanam. Police reported that while riding a two-wheeler near Melur, Seemaraja lost control and crashed into a parapet wall, sustaining fatal head injuries.
While authorities assert that the deaths resulted from a road accident and that Surya confessed to the thefts, Seemaraja's family has raised serious allegations. They claim Seemaraja died in police custody due to torture, leading to a protest outside the Madurai Government Hospital. Tensions briefly rose when protesters were initially denied access to the injured Surya.
