Madurai HC Orders CB-CID Probe into Tirunelveli Attack
19 Jun
Summary
- Madras High Court transferred the Tirunelveli attack probe to CB-CID.
- The original investigation by Palayamkottai police was deemed unfair.
- An Arappor Iyakkam meeting was disrupted by advocates claiming to represent quarry operators.

The Madras High Court has mandated a transfer of the investigation into an attack at a Tirunelveli meeting to the CB-CID. Justice B. Pugalendhi ruled that the Palayamkottai police did not conduct a fair investigation into the November 2, 2025, incident.
The meeting, organized by Arappor Iyakkam to discuss illegal quarrying, was disrupted by individuals identifying themselves as advocates for quarry operators. Petitioners reported assaults and injuries sustained during the commotion, including to senior advocate V. Suresh.
The court noted the presence of police during the incident and expressed concern over the investigating officer's failure to examine key witnesses or collect available media recordings. Justice Pugalendhi observed a potential bias in the initial investigation, citing a hurried filing of a final report.
Recognizing the victim's fundamental right to a fair investigation, the court has directed the Tirunelveli commissioner of police to facilitate the transfer of case files to the CB-CID within two weeks. The CB-CID is tasked with completing its inquiry and submitting a final report within three months.
