Madras HC Overturns Immigration Blacklist for Family Reunion
9 May
Summary
- Son denied entry to India due to past immigration violations.
- Elderly mother's critical condition prompted plea for reunion.
- Court directed authorities to consider emergency visa on humanitarian grounds.

The Madras High Court has intervened in a case concerning a Sri Lankan national, Niraikumar Meiyappan, who sought entry into India to attend to his gravely ill mother. Niraikumar had been blacklisted by Indian immigration authorities following a previous penalty for overstaying his visa, which he paid in April 2018.
His mother, a Sri Lankan Tamil residing in India for decades as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) holder, is currently bedridden and in critical condition. She petitioned the court to remove her son from the immigration blacklist and grant him an emergency visa for her care.
Justice M. Dhandapani noted the absence of any criminal proceedings or adverse reports from law enforcement agencies against Niraikumar. The court has directed the authorities to consider his application for an emergency visa on humanitarian grounds within two weeks.
