- Kinney claims self-defense after an argument escalated to a fight.
- Jones was shot in front of Kinney's home in late July.

Robert Kinney, a 65-year-old man, was indicted by a Lubbock County grand jury on Tuesday for murder. The indictment stems from a fatal shooting incident on July 27, where Stephon Jones, 37, was killed in front of Kinney's home on East Auburn Street.
The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit investigated the shooting, which began after Kinney's wife reported a disturbance. Responding officers found Jones with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An initial investigation indicated that an argument between Kinney and Jones escalated into a fight. Kinney's defense attorney, Matt Morrow, stated that his client was exercising his right to self-defense.
Kinney told detectives that he retrieved his firearm after hearing a concerning statement from someone in a vehicle that arrived at his home. He reported firing a warning shot before Jones approached him. Kinney claimed Jones struck him, causing his gun to discharge, though he admitted to squeezing the trigger.
Jones was unarmed during the altercation. Kinney was arrested the night of the incident and later released on bond. His bond was reduced from $250,000 to $150,000 on August 26.
