LPU Violence: Students Among 9 Arrested
4 Oct
Summary
- Seven of nine arrested accused are LPU students.
- Violence erupted after unverified rape allegations surfaced.
- No corroborative evidence found for the alleged rape.
Punjab Police have arrested nine individuals in connection with the recent violence at Lovely Professional University (LPU), revealing that seven of the accused are students. The unrest, which occurred on September 26, was reportedly triggered by unverified social media reports alleging a student rape. During the incident, a masked mob vandalized university property, set fires, and damaged police vehicles.
Despite LPU management's initial claims of external involvement, the ongoing investigation by a special investigation team (SIT) points to substantial student participation. Police have scrutinized digital evidence, including social media and CCTV footage, to identify those involved in arson, rioting, and attacking law enforcement.
Crucially, the SIT investigating the rape allegation has found no corroborative evidence after reviewing footage and statements. While a rape case was initially registered, the investigation into the alleged incident and the viral Reddit post remains ongoing. Police emphasized that peaceful protesters are not targeted, but those with criminal tendencies will face legal action.
