LPU Violence Erupts Amidst Unconfirmed Rape Rumors

Student violence erupted at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, on Saturday night following unconfirmed rumors of a female student's gang-rape and subsequent death. Approximately 2,000 students took to the highway, causing traffic chaos and damaging university property in their anger. Police were deployed to manage the rioting and clear the highway. Authorities confirmed the situation is under control and discussions are underway with students and university administration.

Investigations by the police have thus far yielded no evidence to support the gang-rape allegations. Officials stated that a recent suicide near the university's agriculture department, occurring several days prior, was unrelated and that no police complaint had been filed regarding rape. The unrest was attributed to widespread confusion stemming from social media rumors. LPU administration urged students and parents not to believe unverified claims, emphasizing the lack of factual basis.

The university registrar confirmed that false information was circulating, causing campus disruption. Efforts are ongoing by LPU administration and police to restore normalcy. A mental health helpline number was also provided for students in need of support.
